A Gothic Backyard Wedding in Thunder Bay That Rocked Tradition

Rebekah and Jarrett’s backyard wedding in Thunder Bay was nothing short of unforgettable. With a bold theme of "Even After Death", this couple’s big day was a stunning celebration of love, individuality, culture, and connection — woven together with gothic elegance, heavy metal vibes, and a deep respect for Indigenous roots.
As a wedding photographer in Thunder Bay, I’m always looking for weddings that break the mold — and this one took the cake. From the moment I arrived at Jarrett’s mother’s countryside home, nestled against a backdrop of golden autumn leaves and quiet mountain views, I knew we were in for something extraordinary.
First Look Magic at the Golf Course
We kicked off the day with a private first look on the golf course just behind their home. The moment was emotional, powerful, and beautifully framed by the rolling greens, dense trees, and the silhouettes of distant mountains. Rebekah looked absolutely fierce in a jet-black wedding gown that flowed like a shadow in the breeze, her look completed with moody florals and gothic-inspired makeup. Jarrett wore his hair in a ribbon braid — a subtle but meaningful nod to his Indigenous heritage.
As they turned to see each other for the first time, there were no words, just smiles and soft tears. It was a moment that felt sacred and raw, exactly as it should be.
Ceremony in the Backyard
The backyard ceremony was held under a crisp fall sky, surrounded by tall trees and their closest family and friends. Their altar was simple but powerful — a handcrafted arch decorated with deep red florals, trailing black fabric, and antler-inspired decor. As Rebekah walked down the aisle to a haunting instrumental metal track, there wasn’t a dry eye in sight.
Guests sat in wooden chairs arranged in a semicircle, creating an intimate space filled with love and support. The couple exchanged personal vows that had everyone laughing one moment and crying the next. The energy was undeniable — raw, real, and deeply authentic.
A Reception Like No Other
After the ceremony, guests moved into a beautifully decorated white tent for the reception. String lights twinkled above as laughter filled the air. The tables were adorned with black lace runners, candles in vintage holders, and wild, moody centerpieces — a perfect balance of gothic romance and rustic charm.
Dinner was catered by Aunt Sarah’s 588 Cafe, and it was nothing short of incredible — hearty, homemade dishes that warmed everyone on the cool September evening. The cake, crafted by Heather Besserer, was a dark chocolate masterpiece with deep red sugar flowers and black icing details that tied perfectly into the theme.
Hair was done by the talented team at WILL & CO., and they absolutely nailed the moody, elegant look for both Rebekah and her bridal party.
Fire, Games & Dancing Under the Stars
As night fell, the reception transitioned outdoors for dancing, lawn games, and a roaring bonfire. The first dance took place under a canopy of stars, surrounded by sparklers and cheering guests. Later in the night, fireworks lit up the sky in an emotional tribute to a love that truly feels eternal.
Guests played bean bag toss, roasted marshmallows, and shared stories around the fire — a scene that felt more like a heartfelt gathering of soulmates than a traditional wedding. It was cozy, wild, and full of joy.
The Wedding Party
The couple was surrounded by an incredible group of friends and family who supported them every step of the way.
Groomsmen: Taylor, Tyler, Liam, Jesse, Austin
Bridesmaids: Lila, Rachel, Sara, Chelsea, Hayley, Erin, Stephanie
Their energy was unmatched — from heartfelt speeches to dance floor antics, they brought so much fun and emotion to the day.
